Important Things to Look for When Buying Used Tractors

Used tractors can be very reliable and quite a savings over new tractors. But there are some things to look for when buying used tractors. The following tips are universal and apply to all types of used heavy machinery. Looking for additional tips on buying a used tractor? Then check out our tips for buying used.

Used Tractors Are Just Like Used Tools

An old used tool, if looked after, can last for generations and so can used tractors. Think of how many people have old tractors still in use on their farm. Tractors are built tough and that goes double for older tractors. So when you are inspecting a used tractor keep on the lookout for signs of abuse and misuse but more than likely it can be fixed even if it is rundown.

Tractor Wear and Tear

Used tractors are just like used cars when it comes to wear and tear. Look at the gas, brake, and clutch pedal of the tractor, if it is heavily worn and the seller claims the tractor has low hours, it may be that you are not getting the whole truth. This also goes for the general appearance of the tractor cab if it has one. This tip is pretty much a universal one and applies to any type of used heavy equipment.

Checking the Oil on the Used Tractors

Check the used tractors engine oil. If it is dark in color and or dirty it may indicate infrequent oil changes, since oil changes are one of the easiest tractor maintenance items, you may be dealing with a neglected tractor.  While you have the dipstick out look for any rust on it and also check to see if there are any water drops or the oil is grayish as this can indicate water in your oil and potential costly repairs such as a new head gasket or a cracked engine block.

Farm Tractors and Other Equipment by Type

Farm tractors can last and last, my dad has a tractor from the sixties and it is still running in top notch form today. That is why smart heavy equipment operators know that buying new is not all that it is cracked up to be.

Used tractors can save you tens of thousands up front and still give you years of low maintenance service and when it is time to make a repair you can purchase used tractor parts that have lots of life left in them for a fraction of the new replacement price.

Leasing companies know that you need to make every dollar count and that is why they offer leases on used farm tractors, especially if you are looking to buy heavy equipment in the following categories:
